Took a break at work today
King Crimson was recently featured on the soundtrack for “Children of Men”, with In the Court of the Crimson King. I was pretty damn pleased when i noticed the song during the movie. They have been used in so few soundtracks (all but one of them were since 1998). This is a true shame as they create music that would be exemplary for many films.
I have been thinking a lot about them recently. Partially due to the above soundtrack. Part because i just finished listening to their full discography again last month.. daily doses of KC to wake me up. Part due to the arrival yesterday of my new turntable, which allowed me to listen to Discipline as well as Prince’s purple rain (yea, i know i have both on my computer, but mp3’s though convenient bear no comparison).
Today, tedious work made my brain melt, so i decided to take the time to make a CD cover for a Tool/Crimson concert i was listening to this afternoon. An album cover already exists for this concert bootleg, but it is nigh impossible to find any larger than 50×78 pixels (yuck).

back in 2001 tool performed a mini tour with King Crimson as their opening band. This was a surprise, but not a shock as many tool members have made mention og Crimson’s influence on them over the years.
The recording the above cover was made for was played on 8/15/01 at SDSU Theater, San Diego, CA. two days later they were in Mexico for more gigs. King Crimson released a decent quality bootleg of their set from this concert to people in their fan club. A full bootleg of their concert is available via P2P. Well worth listening to. King Crimson is the first to play, Tool comes on next. Maynard proceeds to mock people who were foolish enough to miss Crimson,. Later he talks of Fripp serenading him with an acoustic guitar. finally Fripp comes out for an intro to tools set ending and encore.
If anyone truely cant find a copy on P2P perhaps i can help out but if you are in the know, you should be able to manage it. the most common bootleg you will find is just of King Crimson. Look a little harder and you will find 3 hours worth of audio split up for listening as 3 CDs.

On Wikipedia i found a nice quote from an inteview with Fripp and Tool:
Robert Fripp: I was very impressed that the visuals and the band were all part of the same performance. It was … seamless. It was something like, ‘These guys are playing to the same track.’ But without being external to the film … There was an integrity to it all.
Danny Carey: Thanks … We all kind of grew up listening to you.
[…]
Maynard James Keenan (referring to an upcoming concert tour): First of all we’re terrified to go on after you, and second of all we’re gonna have all these kids in the audience going, ‘Hey, TOOL ripped these guys off blind!’
Danny Carey: It feels like that sometimes, for sure!
Robert Fripp: Do you hear the influence? There’s just one figure where I hear an influence, just one. It was a piece we were developing that we dropped. And it’s almost exactly the same figure: three note arpeggio with a particular accent from the guitar. So I don’t think you could have heard it. That’s the only thing.
Thats all i have today..
Oh yeah.. i bought a new laptop that showed up the same day as my turntable. it is pretty kick ass.. to any fool who believes otherwise, i have to tell you… OEM refurbished is just another way of saying less expensive with a hell of a lot better warranty :)
that is all there is to say about that…

Homeland Security offers details on Real ID
and so many people call me a wingnut conspiracy freak.. i might need to start researching states that refuse to comply… it will be those areas that i would choose to live in. that or a fair amount of anti-RFID technology…

Hundreds of millions of Americans will have until 2013 to be outfitted with new digital ID cards, the Bush administration said on Thursday in a long-awaited announcement that reveals details of how the new identification plan will work.
The announcement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers a five-year extension to the deadline for states to issue the ID cards, and proposes creating the equivalent of a national database that would include details on all 240 million licensed drivers.
According to the draft regulations (PDF), which were required by Congress in the 2005 Real ID Act and are unlikely to assuage privacy and cost concerns raised by state legislatures:
• The Real ID cards must include all drivers’ home addresses and other personal information printed on the front and in a two-dimensional barcode on the back. The barcode will not be encrypted because of “operational complexity,” which means that businesses like bars and banks that require ID would be capable of scanning and recording customers’ home addresses.
• A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is under consideration. Homeland Security is asking for input on how the licenses could incorporate “RFID-enabled vicinity chip technology, in addition to” the two-dimensional barcode requirement.
• States must submit a plan of how they’ll comply with the Real ID Act by October 7, 2007. If they don’t, their residents will not be able to use IDs to board planes or enter federal buildings starting on May 11, 2008.
• Homeland Security is considering standardizing a “unique design or color for Real ID licenses,” which would effectively create a uniform national ID card.
Thursday’s draft regulations arrive amid a groundswell of opposition to the Real ID Act from privacy groups, libertarians and state officials. On Wednesday, the National Governors Association endorsed a bill by Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, that would reduce Homeland Security’s power to order states to comply with the law.
