Again, late due to technical difficulties.. anyone with a need for something fun to do this Saturday or Sunday afternoon, read this over and give it a thought!
Jenn and i went to check out Trek in the Park last Sunday afternoon. Basically, a local theater group has been getting together over the last couple years and performing live a live rendition of old star trek episodes.
The episode this year was “Amok Time”. For those unaware, do you remember the third star trek movie “The Search for Spock”? part way through that film, the recently reborn spock is in terrible terrible pain as he ages. he reaches Pon Farr, which is the point in the Vulcan growth cycle when they MUST mate with whomever they are bonded to. if not, they die. The episode “Amok Time” is where this biological heat is first discussed. up till this point, no one really talks about it. Spock goes into his blood fever and starts freaking out.. Kirk needs to get him to Vulcan before he dies.
Once they get to Vulcan, shit hits the fan as Spocks betrothed, T’Pring, refuses him and chooses Kirk as her mate. This forces spock into a fight to the death, whomever wins, gets T’Pring.
They did a fantastic job. all characters were displayed well, acted exceptionally, on the fly issues resolved well (cue nearby train whistle! great job folks!). the set used is minimal, audio exceptional. all in all a great time, even for non trek fans (thanks for going with me Jenn).
For anyone interested in watching this glorious event, it has one more weekend to go.
the show starts at 5pm on Saturday july25th and Sunday the 26th in Woodlawn Park
Woodlawn Park Amphitheater
NE 13th Ave & Dekum St
Portland, OR 97214
FREE
Make sure to go early as the good seats fill up fast. we got there a half hour early and truely lucked out sitting first row center. most people ended up sitting behind the show. I suggest getting there an hour and a half early with a picnic and a scrabble board. make an afternoon of it, its worth it.
next year, we were led to believe they would be performing “Space Seed” the episode that Khan Noonien Singh (of Wrath of Khan fame) is first seen. ( Space Seed on wikipedia ). if so, it is going to be EPIC :)
if it takes to long to buffer, download the FLV directly HERE
To the performers: I am unsure if i was allowed to film any of this, so if not, please dont get angry, just let me know it take it down.
Cats:Geeky Stuff, Kick Ass, Media

Your continual efforts to drag me further into geekdom is working. Not only did I highly enjoy this outing (on one of my precious and oh so few weekends off, I might add) but now I am having pangs to watch the original series. Dare I say what this is going to do to my reputation???!!!
Live long and prosper…..

This is the information age, my friend. We are more than happy that you came and enjoyed yourself, let alone thought highly enough of the performance to film it and share it. Thank you for your glowing words.
We’ll see you next summer, with Khan!
