Book review: The Spellman Files, Lisa Lutz

I am not sure how i felt about this book.

This statement is not a reflection of how i felt about the novel as much as the fact that i was suckered into reading book one of a series. as a standalone book, i enjoyed it. as a series, i think i would rather step on a nail. there are 4 more books..

This is not to say that i did not enjoy The Spellman Files. I did enjoy it, i would recommend it to others. Four more novels (with likely more on the way) that is quite an investment of time to move forward into something i found enjoyable, but not stellar. yet, i already know the characters, i know their personalities and quirks. it seems natural to move to the next in the list.

i drew this on one of our conference room whiteboards.. for some reason, doodling on paper was not adequate yesterday.

perhaps it was because i was listening to a corporate conference call where they openly mocked all of their employees in an effort to “lighten the mood” of the call

This was some of the worst cereal i have ever eaten.

they had some little delta sign marshmallows, and some strange planetoid (earth and vulcan) circle mallows. the bulk of the cereal is comprised of this ultra sweet cardboard material in the shape of little cinnamon buns…

im sorry, not cinnamon buns, galaxies..

i miss the nintendo cereal system.. it was the same garbage in different shapes, but when i ate it, it was before i knew what tasted good.. so i still have good memories of it, regardless of the fact that logically i know it was interchangable with this startrek garbage.

i photoshopped soe mandelbrot fractals so that it looks more space like since the manufacturer failed entirely.

it should also be noted (as a co-worker pointed out) that the front of the box has an error on it.

Today is (Monday) November 23rd 2009!

My goal since around july of this year was to get a bunch of people together at my place and drink some beer. We would kick back and laugh at the glory of FreeJack. Jenn and I contracting the swine flu killed that idea.

Why would a group of adults get together and watch this shit-fest of a movie? BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME! well, hell.. lets go through the cast to start with.. we have : Mick Fucking Jagger, Emilio Estevez, Renee Russo, Anthony Hopkins, Amanda Plummer, John Shea, Esai “I was in La Bamba” Morales, David Johansen…

i really really want an orange crush right now. i had one a couple nights ago (witness the photo) and now i am desperate for another one. i know where i can get one, but it is next to powells bookstore, which is a bad bad place for me to go near when i am virtually penniless. it would be torture, in fact.

mmm. crush…

…………. everytime i hear an REM song i want a crush, though sometimes grape is on my mind. this is not just when the song orange crush is playing, it could be “driver 8″ and i will still dream of a crush.

it is worse when orange crush is playing though, far far worse.. and this makes me feel really really bad.

Book Review: Rasputin’s Daughter – Robert Alexander

This is one of the best books i have read in the the last 12 months.

Rasputin’s Daughter is considered historical fiction. it is based around Maria, one of Grigori Rasputin’s daughters. The book covers the time frame of up to a week prior to Rasputin’s death.

Rasputin himself has been world renowned as a charlatan, a genius, a monk, faith healer and psychic. in folklore, his powers were limitless, his ability to manipulate was matchless, and it took a whole lot to kill the bastard. most of the world knows him as one of the most evil and untamed humans ever to live.
