i am not a fan of christmas, but some things make me smile regardless of my innate humbugness.
back in 1977, bowie was approached to sing a song on crosby’s 1977 christmas special. lore has it that they needed to rewrite a few of the “pa rump pa pum pum” parts due to some star-pandering by bowie. this is fine by me, i dont know why we need some outdated references to a boy offering his buttocks (rump) to jesus… just push it all to the background :)
with the rewrites, the song was also renamed from”Little Drummer Boy” to “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer boy”, which is not reflected on the video.
this was filmed a month before bing died, it was part of his final christmas special.
parts of it are sickly sweet, and the whole video seems a bit forced, like ziggy and bing are only doing it for the ratings, which they were.. does it matter though? no, not in the slightest. it just makes me smile. i have been meaning to post it for a couple years now but never got around to it.
this year however, i ran across a very high quality version of this, recorded off VH1.
i am posting a small version here for bandwidth reasons, but if anyone wants a larger version, i can hook you up. just let me know.
enjoy!
hey, if nothing else, it isnt U2 singing about snow in africa….. god how horrible….
